摘要:This study aimed to illuminate the often-overlooked challenges faced by older adults who live with pets. We adopted a qualitative method, utilizing semi-structured interviews with 18 older pet owners. Participants shared their negative experiences, which were subsequently categorized into five distinct categories. First, caregiving burdens arose from physically demanding tasks, emotional distress related to pet illness or loss, and significant financial pressures. Second, challenges associated with caregiving were often linked to physical or cognitive limitations, skill deficits, and potential safety concerns. Third, participants reported disruptions in their personal lives, including altered sleep patterns, shifts in daily routines, and necessary modifications to their living environments. Fourth, pervasive social stigma surrounding pet ownership further complicated these experiences. Finally, in response to these multifaceted challenges, participants advocated for the promotion of pet-inclusive cultures, the establishment of robust policy frameworks, enhanced animal protection measures, and the development of accessible support services. The findings from this study highlight the need for targeted social policies and support systems tailored to the needs of older owners.
